  1. Which wine regions in Germany are generally east-west oriented, and which are north-south?
    • Wine regions in Germany generally follow the path of a river. Listed here are the 13 anbaugebiete, and their associated rivers with orientation.
    • Quick answers:
      • South to North flow: Mittelrhein, Rheinhessen, Mosel, Nahe
      • West to East flow: Ahr
      • East to West: Rheingau
    • German Wine Regions, Kobrand Map
    • Ahr: Ahr River (Rhein tributary, west to east direction)
    • Mittelrhein (Rhein river, south to north direction)
    • Rheingau (Rhein and Main rivers. East to west orientation)
    • Rheinhessen (Rhein river, south to north direction)
    • Mosel (Moselle/Mosel River, south to north flow, tributary of the Rhein river at Koblenz)
    • Nahe (Nahe river, south to north flow, joins the Rhein at Bingen)
    • Pfalz
    • Baden
    • Württemberg
    • Hessische-Bergstrasse
    • Franken
    • Saale-Unstrut
    • Sachsen
  2. How many hectares does Bordeaux have under vine?
    • Gironde Dept, 2010, 123,889 ha. Compare that figure to just 9,665 ha, in the Côte d’Or!
    • Source: Which Winegrapes are Grown Where“, Kym Anderson, 2010, pp. 100.
    • A similar figure of 117,500 ha is quoted in The Wine Bible” by Karen MacNeil, pp 114, although no date is specified.
  3. State the entire 1855 classification of Bordeaux.
    • This question requires a memory device to complete. Using imagery mnemonics, aka our “Story Palace” method, the answers become easier to remember with visual anchors.
    • Covert communes to people (Pauillac to Paul, Margaux to Margot, St. Estèphe to Stephanie, St. Julien to Julia, etc.)
    • The classification is divided into growths, 1st through 5th. Assign each growth to a body part (1st – head. 2nd – feet. 3rd – right hand. 4th – left hand. 5th – body)
    • For each body part, create a micro-story picture that is anchored to that location. For example, in Pauillac: “On Paul’s head, he is wearing a hat. On the hat is a patch, with the picture of a Sheep in a Tower, Laughing.”
    • The head/hat on Paul refers to 1st growths, the Sheep is Château Mouton Rothschild, the tower is Château Latour, and Laughing refers to Château Lafite Rothschild.
    • Build a full story for all of the growths, and remember the Chateaux with ease!
  4. Where is Ballard Canyon? Can you name a producer?
    • Ballard Canyon AVA is one of the four subregions within the Santa Ynez Valley. Stolpman is a predominant producer. Their “Originals” Syrah is a personal favorite.
    • Somewhat outdated map of Santa Ynez, from Wine Folly (prior to Los Olivos District AVA approval in 2016)
    • A post on Guildsomm shows the various areas of Santa Ynez, including Los Olivos:
