Big List

Based on 333 wines from the Taste Archive, producers are referenced based on actual vintages. As observation dictates, importers can change over time. Data compiled on May 13th, 2017

Analysis

Importers were sorted in the table with the aim to reveal key players based on statistics. The numbers are inherently biased based on the particular selection of wines in our Taste Archive catalog, although for fine wines the spectrum is representative.

First, the list was sorted with emphasis on state, more specifically number of importers in that state total. California leads with 60 importers, followed by New York with 41 then Seattle with 18. States were then sorted by importers who featured the most wines in our collection. Some companies modified names or locations over time, which is noted.

For importers with just one wine represented, a sorting of most-recent vintage was done to show who is likely still active. Many of the importers in this list may have only been in business for a short period of time, either recently or in the past. A track record of 18 years and 15 wines, as shown with Kermit Lynch in our collection, suggests longstanding influence in the import business.

A note on vintage range: while a broad vintage range for an importer may suggest longstanding business activity, that assumption may not be totally correct. Some wines are held at the cellar of the original winery for years, only to be released decades later. This is the case with Cavatappi Distribuzione, who has worked with Johannes Selbach to release outstanding rieslings made by historical Mosel producers from as early as 1985.
